Frank Kaminsky Made The Safe Choice, Not The Scary One

It seems whenever a college basketball athlete praises college athletics, he is revered as a hero. Standing up for the non-One and Done of the world and creating their own path. The latest is Wisconsin Badgers center Frank Kaminsky.

A week ago, Kaminsky announced he was coming back to Wisconsin for his fourth year of school and yesterday, a blog post he wrote became viral as he called the NBA "Boring" among other things talking down about the professional game (Kaminsky clarified his dream isn't boring in another blog post for whatever it's worth). The NBA isn't boring for Kaminsky, it is a terrifying thought to him so he's happy being the Big Man on Campus at Madison. That's perfectly okay yet Kaminsky chose to act like the NBA wasn't important to him which makes zero sense.

Kaminsky is one of the most well-known college basketball players in the country.  He started gaining a bandwagon outside of Wisconsin when he dropped 43 points against North Dakota. It continued to grow with his strong Big Ten season, and the bandwagon reached the pinnacle during Wisconsin's Final Four run. Kaminsky staying at school leads to columns about Kaminsky being a contender for National Player of the Year, B1G Player of the Year, probably guest writing somewhere given his ability to blog, everything under the sun is possible for Kaminsky.  Also he is playing for a probable top five preseason team returning everyone minus Ben Brust poised to make another run at the National Championship.

Look at the paragraph above, why the hell would you leave college? Kaminsky has the world at his fingertips. If he decided to go the NBA route, Kaminsky would get picked in the second round without question because he is seven foot and can shoot but that doesn't guarantee he would be playing meaningful minutes. Wisconsin would still be a top 10 or 15 team without Kaminsky, and they would probably succeed which would probably sting Frank The Tank in more ways than one. The National Basketball Association isn't boring to Kaminsky rather there is too much unpredictability for him to take the risk with all of the things college basketball will present itself with next season.

This all being said, Badgers fans should not be seeing this as a commitment to Wisconsin or the Wisconsin way. This has more to do with Kaminsky playing it safe and not pulling a Vander Blue, believing his postseason success would translate into an NBA career, rather than staying in college athletes. There is nothing wrong with Kaminsky lying up on the Par 5 that is college basketball. You can still make birdie doing it. Frank needs to wait another year to cash a professional check and who knows if he improves next season, he is likely a mid-first round pick with a fringe lottery selection.

The other question here is what are the new expectations for Kaminsky? Is there a chance he peaked last season or does he has another level? That remains to be unseen, but even with Kaminsky's safe choice, newfound pressures will come along with it.
